« Écoute, ô peuple »

En novembre 1831, l’Église rétablie de Jésus-Christ avait tout juste un an et demi. Bien qu’en train de grandir, c’était encore un groupe obscur de croyants vivant sur une Frontière à la population clairsemée, dirigé par un prophète âgé de vingt-cinq ans. Mais Dieu considérait ces croyants comme ses serviteurs et ses messagers et il voulait que les révélations qu’il leur avait données soient publiées au monde.

La section 1 des Doctrine et Alliances est la préface du Seigneur à la compilation de ces révélations et elle montre clairement qu’en dépit du petit nombre de membres de l’Église, le message que Dieu voulait que ses saints proclament n’était en rien petit. C’est une « voix d’avertissement » pour tous les « habitants de la terre », qui leur enseigne de se repentir et d’établir l’« alliance éternelle » de Dieu (versets 4, 8, 22). Les serviteurs porteurs de ce message sont « les faibles et les simples », mais des serviteurs humbles sont exactement ce dont Dieu a besoin – aujourd’hui comme à l’époque – pour « faire sortir son Église de l’obscurité et des ténèbres » (versets 23, 30).

“Hearken, O Ye People”

In November 1831, the restored Church of Jesus Christ was just a year and a half old. Though growing, it was still an obscure group of believers living in a sparsely settled frontier, led by a prophet in his mid-twenties. But God considered these believers to be His servants and His messengers, and He wanted the revelations He had given them to be published to the world.

Doctrine and Covenants section 1 is the Lord’s preface to the compilation of these revelations, and it clearly shows that even though the membership of the Church was small, there was nothing small about the message God wanted His Saints to share. It is a “voice of warning” for all “the inhabitants of the earth,” teaching them to repent and establish God’s “everlasting covenant” (verses 4, 8, 22). The servants carrying this message are “the weak and the simple,” but humble servants are just what God needs—then and now—to bring His Church “out of obscurity and out of darkness” (verses 23, 30).

L’esprit de Noël

« Quand nous gardons l’esprit de Noël, nous gardons l’esprit du Christ, car l’esprit de Noël est l’esprit du Christ. Cela chassera toutes les distractions autour de nous qui peuvent étouffer Noël et engloutir sa vraie signification.

Parce que Jésus-Christ est venu sur terre, nous avons un exemple parfait à suivre... C’est son exemple qui, si nous le suivons, suscite en nous plus de gentillesse et d’amour, plus de respect et de souci des autres.

Sa mission a été l’Expiation. Cette mission lui appartenait, à lui seul. Né d’une mère mortelle et d’un Père immortel, il était le seul à pouvoir offrir volontairement sa vie et à la reprendre (voir Jean 10:14-18). Les conséquences glorieuses de son expiation ont été infinies et éternelles. Il a enlevé son aiguillon à la mort et, grâce à lui, le chagrin que suscite le tombeau est devenu temporaire (voir 1 Corinthiens 15:54-55). 

son expiation a ouvert la voie nous permettant d’être éternellement unis à lui et à notre famille. Nous considérons cette perspective comme étant la vie éternelle, le plus grand don de Dieu à l’homme (voir D&A 14:7).

Personne d’autre ne pouvait accomplir l’Expiation. Personne d’autre, même avec la plus grande richesse et le plus grand pouvoir, n’aurait jamais pu sauver une seule âme, pas même la sienne (voir Matthieu 19:24-26). Et il ne sera requis de personne d’autre et personne d’autre n’aura la permission de verser son sang pour le salut éternel d’un autre être humain. Jésus l’a fait « une fois pour toutes »

to earth, we have a perfect example to follow. It is His example which, if followed, stirs within us more kindness and love, more respect and concern for others.

His mission was the Atonement. That mission was uniquely His. Born of a mortal mother and an immortal Father, He was the only one who could voluntarily lay down His life and take it up again (Jesus did it “once for all”)

I joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 17 years old. Sister Marlene Velez was my first and only seminary teacher. I don’t remember much of what she taught, but I remember what I felt in her classes. She showed me the path of discipleship, and I followed. To a new convert like me, Sister Velez was a gift from God.
