« JE SUIS CELUI QUI VIT, JE SUIS CELUI QUI FUT IMMOLÉ »

Le 3 avril 1836 était un dimanche de Pâques. Après avoir aidé à administrer la Sainte-Cène aux saints assemblés dans le temple de Kirtland nouvellement consacré, Joseph Smith et Oliver Cowdery trouvèrent un endroit tranquille derrière un voile du temple et s’inclinèrent pour prier en silence. Alors, en ce jour sacré où les chrétiens de partout commémoraient la résurrection de Jésus-Christ, le Sauveur ressuscité lui-même apparut dans son temple, déclarant : « Je suis celui qui vit, je suis celui qui fut immolé » (Doctrine et Alliances 110:4). Que signifie le fait que Jésus-Christ est « celui qui vit » ? Cela ne veut pas dire simplement qu’il est sorti du tombeau le troisième jour et est apparu à ses disciples galiléens. Cela signifie qu’il vit aujourd’hui. Il parle par l’intermédiaire de prophètes aujourd’hui. Il dirige son Église aujourd’hui. Il guérit les âmes blessées et les cœurs brisés aujourd’hui. Nous pouvons donc reprendre en écho les paroles du témoignage puissant de Joseph Smith : « Après les nombreux témoignages qui ont été rendus de lui, voici le témoignage […] que nous rendons de lui : qu’il vit ! »(Doctrine et Alliances 76:22). Nous pouvons entendre sa voix dans ces révélations. Nous pouvons voir sa main dans notre vie. Et nous pouvons tous ressentir « que ces mots réchauffent le cœur : ‘Je sais qu’il vit mon Rédempteur !’ »(Cantiques, n° 73).

Easter 

“I AM HE WHO LIVETH, I AM HE WHO WAS SLAIN”

April 3, 1836, was Easter Sunday. After helping administer the sacrament to Saints gathered in the newly dedicated Kirtland Temple, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery found a quiet place behind a veil in the temple and bowed in silent prayer. Then, on this sacred day when Christians everywhere were commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the risen Savior Himself appeared in His temple, declaring, “I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain” (Doctrine and Covenants 110:4). What does it mean to say that Jesus Christ is “he who liveth”? It doesn’t just mean that He rose from the tomb on the third day and appeared to His Galilean disciples. It means that He lives today. He speaks through prophets today. He leads His Church today. He heals wounded souls and broken hearts today. So we can echo the words of Joseph Smith’s powerful testimony: “After the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony ... which we give of him: That he lives!” (Doctrine and Covenants 76:22). We can hear His voice in these revelations. We can witness His hand in our lives. And we can each feel “the joy this sentence gives: ‘I know that my Redeemer lives!’” (Hymns, no. 136).

Bien que l’Église de Jésus-Christ ait été organisée en 1830, beaucoup de vérités de l’Évangile devaient encore être révélées et plusieurs membres de la jeune Église avaient des questions à poser. Ils avaient lu des prophéties dans le Livre de Mormon au sujet du rassemblement d’Israël et de l’établissement de Sion (voir 3 Néphi 21). Comment cela allait-il se faire ? Les révélations qu’Hiram Page prétendait recevoir traitaient de ce sujet, ce qui ne faisait qu’augmenter la curiosité des membres (voir Doctrine et Alliances 28). D’autres personnes s’interrogeaient au sujet de la chute d’Adam et Ève et de la mort spirituelle. En 1830, le Seigneur accueillit ces questions avec bienveillance : « Tout ce que vous demanderez avec foi, dit-il aux saints, étant unis dans la prière, comme je vous l’ai commandé, vous le recevrez » (Doctrine et Alliances 29:6). Et aujourd’hui, ce sont nos questions qu’il accueille avec bienveillance ; il attend simplement que nous les posions dans nos prières. En fait, comme la révélation donnée dans Doctrine et Alliances 29, riche en doctrine, le montre, il répond parfois en nous révélant des vérités et de la connaissance qui vont au-delà des questions que nous avons posées.

JESUS CHRIST WILL GATHER HIS PEOPLE

Even though the Church of Jesus Christ had been organized in 1830, many gospel truths were still to be revealed, and several early Church members had questions. They had read prophecies in the Book of Mormon about the gathering of Israel and the building up of Zion (see 3 Nephi 21). How would that happen? The revelations Hiram Page claimed to receive addressed that subject, which only increased members’ curiosity (see Doctrine and Covenants 28). Other people wondered about the Fall of Adam and Eve and spiritual death. The Lord welcomed these questions in 1830: “Whatsoever ye shall ask in faith,” He told the Saints, “being united in prayer according to my command, ye shall receive” (Doctrine and Covenants 29:6). And He welcomes our questions today; He’s just waiting for us to ask Him in prayer. In fact, as the doctrinally rich revelation in Doctrine and Covenants 29 shows, He sometimes responds by imparting truth and knowledge beyond the questions we asked in the first place.

La révélation était encore un concept relativement nouveau pour les saints tandis que le Rétablissement se poursuivait. Les premiers membres de l’Église savaient que Joseph Smith, le prophète, pouvait recevoir la révélation pour l’Église, mais d’autres le pouvaient-ils ? Les questions de ce genre devinrent cruciales quand Hiram Page, l’un des huit témoins des plaques d’or, crut qu’il avait reçu des révélations pour l’Église. De nombreux saints fidèles croyaient que ces révélations venaient de Dieu. Le Seigneur répondit en enseignant que, dans son Église, « tout doit se faire avec ordre » (Doctrine et Alliances 28 :13), ce qui signifiait en avoir un seul qui soit « désigné pour recevoir des commandements et des révélations » pour l’Église tout entière (Doctrine et Alliances 28:2). Néanmoins, d’autres pouvaient recevoir la révélation personnelle pour leur intendance dans l’œuvre du Seigneur. En fait, les paroles du Seigneur à Oliver Cowdery sont un rappel pour nous tous : « Ce que tu feras te sera donné » (Doctrine et Alliances 28:15).

“ALL THINGS MUST BE DONE IN ORDER”

Revelation was still a relatively new concept for the Saints as the Restoration continued to unfold. Early Church members knew that the Prophet Joseph Smith could receive revelation for the Church, but could others? Questions like this became critical when Hiram Page, one of the Eight Witnesses of the gold plates, believed he had received revelations for the Church. Many faithful Saints believed that these revelations were from God. The Lord responded by teaching that in His Church “all things must be done in order” (Doctrine and Covenants 28:13), which meant having only one “appointed to receive commandments and revelations” for the entire Church (Doctrine and Covenants 28:2). Even so, others could receive personal revelation for their part in the Lord’s work. In fact, the Lord’s words to Oliver Cowdery are a reminder to all of us: “It shall be given thee ... what thou shalt do” (Doctrine and Covenants 28:15).
