3 Néphi 20-26

« Vous êtes les enfants de l’alliance »

Lorsque vous entendez des gens employer des termes tels que maison d’Israël, avez-vous l’impression qu’ils parlent de vous ? Les Néphites et les Lamanites sont des descendants littéraux d’Israël (leur histoire commence même à Jérusalem) mais pour certains d’entre eux, Jérusalem doit leur sembler être « un pays qui est très lointain, un pays qu’[ils] ne connaiss[ent] pas » (Hélaman 16:20). En effet, ils sont « une branche de l’arbre d’Israël » mais qui est « perdue loin de son tronc » (Alma 26:36 ; voir aussi 1 Néphi 15:12). Lorsque le Sauveur leur apparaît, il veut qu’ils sachent qu’ils ne sont pas perdus pour lui. Il dit : « Vous êtes de la nation d’Israël ; et vous êtes de l’alliance » (3 Néphi 20:25). Il vous en dirait autant aujourd’hui car quiconque se fait baptiser et fait alliance avec lui est également de la maison d’Israël, « de l’alliance », quels que soient les personnes dont il descend ou l’endroit où il habite. En d’autres termes, lorsque Jésus parle de la maison d’Israël, il parle de vous. Le commandement de bénir « toutes les nations de la terre » vous est destiné (3 Néphi 20:27). L’invitation à vous réveiller de nouveau et à vous revêtir de votre force vous est adressée (voir 3 Néphi 20:36). Et sa promesse précieuse : « Mon amour ne s’éloignera point de toi, et mon alliance de paix ne chancellera point », vous est offerte (3 Néphi 22:10).

“Ye Are the Children of the Covenant”

When you hear people use terms like house of Israel, do you feel like they’re talking about you? The Nephites and Lamanites were literal descendants of Israel —their story even begins in Jerusalem —but to some of them, Jerusalem must have seemed like “a land which is far distant, a land which we know not” (Helaman 16:20). Yes, they were “a branch of the tree of Israel,” but they were also “lost from its body” (Alma 26:36; see also 1 Nephi 15:12). But when the Savior appeared to them, He wanted them to know that they were not lost to Him. “Ye are of the house of Israel,” He said, “and ye are of the covenant” (3 Nephi 20:25). He might say something similar to you today, for anyone who is baptized and makes covenants with Him is also of the house of Israel, “of the covenant,” no matter who you descend from or where you live. In other words, when Jesus speaks of the house of Israel, He is talking about you. The instruction to bless “all the kindreds of the earth” is for you (3 Nephi 20:27). The invitation to “awake again, and put on thy strength” is for you (3 Nephi 20:36). And His precious promise, “My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed,” is for you (3 Nephi 22:10).
